Saturday I went to the Crown Prints Prize Tournament (a fundraiser for the local newsletter, not a misspelling) in La Crescenta, and was completely taken by surprise when I was presented with my Award of Arms!
For those unfamiliar, the SCA is a historical recreationist society. I originally found it because of fencing, but have also enjoyed dancing, cooking, and watching - if not yet participating in - the various arts and sciences.
From Living In The SCA:
"The most common award given is the bare Award of Arms. It is generally the first award that people receive in the SCA, and can be given for recognition of service, promise in the Arts, Sciences, Fighting, or Archery. The AoA is widely considered to indicate that the individual is involved and active enough in the SCA to be a real asset to the Society, rather than just someone who occasionally shows up at meetings or fighting practice. Receiving an AoA means that the individual is now a Lord or Lady, and should be addressed as such."
It's a great feeling to get this recognition; it's always nice to feel appreciated and know that someone noticed. I've come to realize my legacy will not be as a great fighter - good, yes, but not one of the perennial champions. I'm ok with this, if not happy about it, because my greatness as a fighter is only so much under my control until I hit things like injuries and physical limitations. But what is under my control is my dedication and willingness as a teacher. So I've decided to make my students my legacy, and leave my mark by teaching great fighters. I feel like this is my first major milestone on this path.
